Advanced Fingerpicking Guitar Techniques Ragtime Blues Guitar
Stefan Grossman Page Two

harmony and theory back coverA discussion of Finger picks is next and Stefan tells us what he uses and how he prefers none at all usually and how we really have to dampen the bass strings with our palms heel when using them. He does not want us to use finger picks until later. He recommends learning to play without them and to later use them for volume and differing requirements of various songs we come across.

'Glory of Love' is in the key of C and was in its day a 1940's POP Tune by Big Bill Broonzy. Its the next number and here we use a plastic thumb pick and brass finger picks on the 1st two fingers. He laments the markets lack of old dobro picks no longer made to get that original sound. He teaches us the monotonic bass and contrasts it to the alternating bass which in this song uses both techniques.

A discussion of Rev. Gary Davis is next and his special right hand roll but the camera work could be better and the explanation of more depth.  'Buck Dance' is the next song and by the Rev. Davis and Stefan takes some time showing us the odd voicings used like C7th but with his thumb involved. If you want to learn to play orchestral chords (10th chords) see this review.

A Medley follows and finally 'Twelve Sticks' by Gary Davis in the key of G. If you have read this far and like this kind of guitar music and have some quite good fingerstyle and steady thumb skills I don't see any reason not to buy this. Other wise start at the beginning. Basically all these Stefan Grossman DVD guitar lessons are heavy on the left hand and light on the right in my considered opinion. There are a couple he says are for beginners but even those do the same thing.
