The late Albert Collins a.k.a. "the Ice Man" was a Telecaster devotee and Greg switches to a nice blond Tele (changing from his pale green Strat) for this demonstration. He describes the intricacies of Alberts style which is heavy on bends and vibrato not to mention plucking and snapping the strings with your fingers and thumbs.
The first C minor pentatonic lick starts in pentatonic box position two at the 11th fret and moves to box position one at the 7th fret. To play the notes of this lick isn't what hard about it.
Getting it to sound like Albert Collins requires the proper attitude, an over drawn bank account, a woman who has maxed out your credit card, drunk all your beer, smoked up your stash, plus finger strength and correct tone.
Lick number two is in Bb and has you jumping from box two to box one and then back again with a bend at the end. Good thing you know your pentatonic boxes and how they blend into one another.
Eddie Van Halen is up next and Greg picks a tapping lick a la the Cradle will Rock to show us. For the 2nd lick, an Alan Holdsworth-esque descending run in A as in Hot for Teacher. These are tapping licks and the 1st one is easier than the second. To learn two-handed guitar tapping go here.
Eric Clapton is next and there are two licks which come from his early career in the John Mayall's Blues Breakers and Cream period. Lick one is basically a simple pentatonic lick starting at the 5th fret in box one and moving up to box two played fast with Claptons own flair. You can learn this. Lick two is heavy on the vibrato with a clean tone with a small bit of Fender distortion and I think its in the key of B only because Greg doesn't tell us. You can learn this too if you give it a shot.
