Classical Guitar - Frederic Hand Page 2/4

harmony and theory back coverThere are fingerpicking rules taught here worth their weight in fiat money that answer questions I knew there was an answer to somewhere. Like what's the rule of Thumb? Nude thumb or fitted out with a plastic thumb pick? Start bare. Learn to play fingerstyle bare without a pick first.

I got to hand it to Mr. Hand! He spends the first 16 chapters on the right hand. The mother plucking hand as it were! My right thumb hand (and my left foot tapping and counting time ideally) but he leaves out any mention of pedestrian foot tapping. In fact you don't move your body hardly at all once you get situated and he takes you through all that in adequate detail and my compliments to him.

I want to say that classical guitar is the progenitor of all fingerpicking styles. In olden medieval times there was written lute music too. So those along with piano and harpsichord have influenced all the other wonderful finger styles of today. Including steady thumb, folk and rockabilly.

A lofty claim you may scoff at but that alone lifts this classical guitar lesson to the top of MY instructional guitar lesson heap. That has to do with fingerstyle guitar anyway. Lots country and religious music comes our way fingerstyle too. There are so many styles that I like which use finger style. And I am informing you with good intent that here in this lesson is the main secret to how to pluck and where to hold your hand and thumb according to Mr. Hand and I am inclined to agree with him. Where you take these principles is up to y'all. Its not the only fingerstyle instructional method I would use but it is where to start. Other guitar fingerstyle methods to learn a lot from are here, and steady thumb guitar fingerstyle here.
