Jim Kelly's Guitar Workshop - Berklee College of Music Page Two

back coverOn the other hand maybe I would have, to see if I like Berklee. I have another Berklee Press release that I do the exercises from daily.

They don't kid around at Berklee and you need to be willing to practice every day for several hours if need be. Musicians Institute is another Music School worth knowing about and with some select good material. G.I.T is another.

It was a slog to get up to speed with that other Berklee Press lesson: Joe Stump's Chop Builder.

Very funny title! I am glad I kept at it. And if you kept at this particular lesson, and already had some guitar experience, no doubt you would unlock more secrets commensurate with your effort.

Its designed to offer challenging compositions which Jim has written in honor of other famous players he knows and admires.

In my opinion, the lessons difficulty puts much of it out of non-serious players reach. As usual we would be copying. To copy successfully can be done. After all trained seals have demonstrated their ability in that regard. To gain skill and to remember is harder.

To be successful I would imagine you would need a previously laid foundation including theory, scales, chords, arpeggios. A working knowledge even a dim working knowledge is a start. So this is not a beginners guitar lesson by any means. You won't find that foundation here.

What you will find is some very nice Fender Stratocaster guitar playing. There is a 10 song menu also categorized by its 10 styles menu. The styles are: Jazz Blues, Latin, R & B I & II, Swing, Solo Acoustic, Solo Classical, Jazz, Funk, and Shuffle Blues.
