Jim Kelly's Guitar Workshop - Berklee College of Music Page Four

I head over to 'Mr. Stern' & the funk menu. Jim tells us he wrote this for Mike Stern a classmate of his. It sounds like Grover Washington's Mr. Magic to me in case you are familiar with that. Jazz Funk. 10 minutes. OK I got the book with chord symbols like C7, F9, D7b5 and but wait there dimly below is TAB. There is still none for 'Till Tomorrow' how odd. Half the tunes in the extra book do not have TAB but only music notation. The other half have both.

R & B I is called 'Etta' over simple A and Bm7th chord changes. Its very nice melodically and paced well. Everyone should know how to play this I ii change.

R & B II is a rhythm guitar study using Dominant 7th  chords. I can play that! Its got chords and note voicings in the bass giving it momentum and a real nice I IV V thing a beginner or even later could sink their mandibles into. About 5 minutes.

Acoustic Solo is called 'The Shrubber' in honor of Monty Python and Medieval music. It sounds like a video game score. We're heading into to town looking to cop some high quality Mana. 6 minutes.

Classical (Stratocaster) Solo is a 'Study in Cm' is a very nice piece but no TAB. Its an alternate picking exercise to be played with a metronome at slow tempo and moving up gradually.  I like it.

Ten songs, ten styles. There is some finger picking but not folk style. Would definitely make thoughtful & all round  informed gift to a lightly seasoned but still thirsty guitar student.
